Hillel at Stanford's Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Trip to Kyiv, Ukraine

This student leadership program, in partnership with NCSJ from Washington D.C., provides American Jewish students the opportunity to participate in an advocacy program with Jewish students from the former Soviet Union. Last year Stanford students traveled to Moscow, Russia, and this year we will travel to Kyiv, Ukraine!  This eight-day seminar will offer participants an introduction to Jewish life in Ukraine today through meetings with Jewish students, Jewish community leaders, representatives of international Jewish organizations, and Ukrainian, American, and Israeli government officials.  Participants will learn about the challenges faced by Jews in an emerging democracy and create a partnership between the Jewish communities of Stanford and Kyiv. Through this experience, we will learn a great deal about history, contemporary global issues and our own Jewish identities.

We will also engage in ongoing volunteer work throughout our time in Kyiv. This work will be profound and helpful, and it will also be a powerful way for us to intimately encounter a dimension of Jewish life in this region. We will spend the week with students from the Kyiv Hillel, and we will have many opportunities to explore the city itself.

The program will run from approximately March 21-28. It is heavily subsidized, so the total cost for participants is $1200 (includes airfare, room and board, and all other program costs). Financial aid is available.
