Overview

The mission of Hillel at Stanford is to create Jewish experiences of distinctively positive quality and impact that enrich the lives of students and local young adults, and that prepare emerging leaders to shape the future and lead with Jewish values.

By creating a named Program Endowment, donors have the opportunity to enrich Jewish life at Stanford and build the Jewish future, in perpetuity, in a way that is personally meaningful.

The program endowments that we have identified below are merely a sampling of the possibilities. We invite you to explore with us the areas that are of particular interest to you so that we may evolve together the most appropriate way to reflect your interests while strengthening Jewish student life at Stanford.

Hillel is also seeking to build its permanent, unrestricted endowment, which will be used to supplement the contributions Hillel receives each year through the Annual Fund. Unrestricted gifts to the Hillel endowment will give Hillel the ability to respond to student interest and demand with the greatest degree of flexibility.  In view of that need, Hillel is pleased to offer naming opportunities for rooms and other spaces at the Ziff Center in appreciation of unrestricted endowment fund gifts.  The list of room and other space naming opportunities are found at the bottom of the listing below.

Naming Opportunities

Named Executive Director and Rabbi Positions, Each     $1,500,000

The ability over time to hire an Executive Director and Rabbi who are both technically qualified and who will inspire and relate well to students, faculty, and the broader Jewish community, is of paramount importance to the future of Jewish life at Stanford.  These two endowments will provide the major portion of the salaries for these two positions.

Shabbat Dinners                                                                    $750,000

30 weekly Kosher Shabbat dinners following two services per Shabbat, with a variety of educational, cultural, and Scholar-in-Residence Shabbat programs throughout the school year.  Special programs include inviting outside speakers, bringing in guest musical service leaders, and innovative student-initiated Shabbat theme programs.

Student Leadership Development
in Memory of Robert Levison, Jr. '48
$525,000

A total of $525,000 is sought through many gifts in memory of Robert Levison, Jr. '48, to support a multi-track leadership program that includes separate undergraduate fellowships and graduate Jewish leadership seminars; subsidies to enable students to participate in a wide array of national conferences; support for Hillel at Stanford’s mentorship program; and leadership dinner series that provide students with the opportunity to engage with prominent local, national and international leaders in informal settings, usually over dinner prior to public lectures.

Passover Seders                                                                   $500,000

Support for a wide variety of themed Seders each year to appeal to the broadest possible spectrum of Jewish students, including Orthodox, Liberal, Social Action, Graduate, and dorm-based student led Seders.  450 students have participated annually in recent years, but at a cost per student that if subsidized further, would increase participation.

Israel Programs                                                                    $300,000

Israel education and advocacy programs, including speakers, leadership training seminars, participation in pro-Israel conferences, and follow-up programming for travel to Israel.

Tzedek (Social Action)                                                         $250,000

Student participation in social action programs locally, domestically and internationally.  Also supports student scholarships for participation in social action advocacy training and workshops.

Cultural and Educational                                                      $200,000

Programs covering a variety of Jewish educational and cultural topics, including Scholar-In-Residence and guest lecturer events, theater and music performances, and opportunities for speakers and artists to meet with Jewish students informally.

Partnership with Stanford Lively Arts                               $200,000

In partnership programs with Stanford Lively Arts, Hillel at Stanford brings internationally renowned artists to campus, providing informal sessions for students with the artists, as well as large public performances for the community at large.  Artists sponsored in recent years include virtuosos violinist Daniel Heifitz, Argentinean Jewish composer Osvaldo Golijov, the Klezmer Conservatory Band and NPR personalities Terry Gross and Ira Glass.

Hillel Student Allocations Committee (HSAC)                   $100,000

Consistent with Hillel’s mission internationally, Hillel at Stanford recently transitioned the allocation process for support of student-initiated programs to student leaders themselves.  This initiative enables student leaders, with the guidance of staff, to envision, create and support the student community by allocating discretionary program funds for student initiated programs in a variety of areas: cultural, educational, religious, social action or social.
